The min-max formula

Min = (average daily demand × lead time) + safety stock
Max = Min + order quantity
Order = Max − (on hand + on order), when on hand + on order is at or below Min

A worked example

An item sells 20 units a day, with a 10-day lead time, 60 units of safety stock and an order quantity of 200. The minimum is 260 and the maximum is 460. With 190 on hand and 50 on order, your position of 240 is below the minimum, so you order 220. For more detail, read our guide to min-max inventory.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not know my safety stock?

Work it out first with the safety stock calculator, then enter the result here.

What order quantity should I use?

An economic order quantity, a supplier minimum, or a set number of weeks of demand all work. Use whichever your supplier and cash allow.

Why include stock on order?

If you look only at the shelf, you will order again for stock that is already on its way.
