Landed cost calculator

See what an imported item really costs once freight, duty and fees are added to the ex-works price.

Customs valuation rules differ by country. Check which applies to you.

How it works

Landed cost is the full cost of getting a product to your door. The calculator adds four things together: the goods value (unit price times quantity), the freight you pay, the duty, and any other fees such as insurance and brokerage.

Duty is the duty rate applied to a customs value. By default the calculator applies your rate to the goods value only. If your customs value includes freight, switch the duty basis to goods value plus freight.

The formula in plain words

Landed cost = (unit price x quantity) + freight + duty + other fees
Duty = duty rate x customs value (goods value, or goods value plus freight)
Landed cost per unit = landed cost / quantity
Uplift = (landed cost - goods value) / goods value

Worked example

This is an example only, using made-up round numbers to show the arithmetic. They are not benchmarks, and the results were produced by this page's calculator script.

Inputs: unit price 12.50, quantity 2,000, freight 3,200, duty rate 6.5%, other fees 450, duty calculated on goods value only.

Results:

  • Goods value (ex-works): 25,000.00
  • Duty amount: 1,625.00
  • Total landed cost: 30,275.00
  • Landed cost per unit: 15.14
  • Uplift over ex-works: 21.10%

Frequently asked questions

What is landed cost?

Landed cost is the total cost of getting a product from the supplier to your door or warehouse. It includes the purchase price plus freight, insurance, duty and other fees such as brokerage.

What costs should I include in a landed cost calculation?

Include the supplier price, freight, insurance, duty and tariffs, customs brokerage and any port, handling or inland transport charges. This calculator has fields for the main items; add anything else to the other fees field.

How is duty calculated in this landed cost calculator?

Duty is your duty rate applied to the customs value. You can apply it to the goods value only or to the goods value plus freight. Customs valuation rules differ by country, so confirm the basis and rate with your customs broker.

Is landed cost the same as total cost of ownership?

No. Landed cost stops at the point the goods are ready for you to sell or use. Total cost of ownership also looks at things like quality, inventory carrying cost and payment terms.

Does this calculator store the numbers I enter?

No. It runs in your browser and the numbers you type are not sent anywhere or stored. The results are estimates for planning only.
