The sell-through formula
A worked example
You received 500 units and sold 75 in the first 4 weeks of a 12-week period, with a target of 80%. Sell-through is 15.0%. To be on pace you would need 26.7% by now, so you are 11.7 points behind and heading for about 45% by the end. For more detail, read our guide to the sell-through rate formula.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good sell-through rate?
It depends on the product and the period. Published retail guidance often ranges from 40% to 80%, so compare with your own plan for each category.
What if I sold stock received in an earlier period?
Use units sold ÷ (units sold + units on hand) for that period, and keep the definition the same each time you report.
How is the projection worked out?
It assumes you keep selling at your average rate so far. Sales early in a season often run faster or slower than later, so treat it as a guide.
