Supply chain software vendors spent September talking about agentic AI, faster deployment and smaller entry points for growing companies. Here are six announcements worth knowing about, with a plain note on what each could mean for a manufacturer. Product claims are the vendors’ own unless stated otherwise.
For context, Gartner offered a reality check on September 24. It predicted that by 2030 only 5% of organizations using planning automation will make at least 10% of planning decisions autonomously, citing the ongoing need for human oversight and readiness gaps.
o9 Solutions signs Arc’teryx for end-to-end planning (September 8)
o9 announced that outdoor brand Arc’teryx selected its Digital Brain platform. The rollout covers merchandise financial planning, demand planning, store allocation and replenishment, supply chain planning and integrated business planning on one platform.
What it could mean: vendors are pushing to replace separate planning tools with a single platform. For a mid-size manufacturer, the question is whether one platform fits your planning maturity, or whether a narrower tool solves today’s problem.
Blue Yonder adds agentic AI to its retail portfolio (early September)
Blue Yonder announced retail updates to its Cognitive Solutions portfolio, SupplyChain Strategy reported on September 7. The release links forecasting, inventory planning, fulfillment, customer service and returns. It adds returns tools for routing, receipt, grading and disposition. Blue Yonder says its returns management moves returned items back to sellable stock about 25% faster on average.
What it could mean: the release targets retailers, but manufacturers that sell direct or handle returns and repairs face the same problem of getting returned goods back into usable stock.
Kinaxis previews its agentic AI roadmap (September 15)
Kinaxis announced the program for its Kinexions EMEA conference in Barcelona, October 26-28. It will show the next steps for its Maestro platform and how forward-deployed engineering teams help customers move agentic AI into real operations. The release cites a figure that just 12% of supply chain leaders consider themselves AI leaders.
What it could mean: vendors increasingly pair software with hands-on engineering help. When you evaluate tools, ask how much of the promised value depends on vendor services.
Manhattan Associates launches Editions (September 22)
Manhattan launched Editions for its warehouse, transportation, store and order management products: Essentials, Enterprise and Enterprise Premier. The company says customers can start with Essentials and move up without reimplementation, retraining or data migration.
What it could mean: enterprise vendors are building entry tiers for growing companies. That can make a well-known warehouse or transportation system more reachable. Check carefully what each tier includes and how pricing changes as you move up.
Descartes launches an AI agent for trade data (September 24)
Descartes introduced the Datamyne AI Agent, which answers plain-language questions about import and export data. The company says the underlying database covers 230 markets and adds more than 500 million shipment records a year. Answers come with the supporting shipment records so users can check them. Descartes says the agent can cut research time by up to 90%, depending on the user and the question.
What it could mean: for teams researching alternative suppliers or watching competitors’ sourcing shifts, tools like this can speed up the first pass. The supporting records are the important part, because they let a person verify the answer.
Flexport opens its platform to AI agents (September 29)
Flexport launched a server that lets shippers’ own AI agents track, quote and book freight, FreightWaves reported. The release also added a guided tariff classification tool with linked CBP rulings and the option of broker review. It extended its free Atlas trade map to air, rail and barge, and opened an automated fulfillment center outside Chicago. Flexport says every exception routes to a human expert.
What it could mean: booking and tracking freight through your own AI assistant is becoming possible. For most smaller shippers, the more immediate value may be the classification and entry-audit tools, given how often tariff rules are changing.
The takeaway
The pattern across these announcements is clear: AI agents, smaller entry tiers and more vendor help with deployment. The constraint is still your own data and processes. If you want help judging which tools fit your stage, our AI support service starts with a free 30-minute call, and we agree the scope before any work starts.
